Friday Favorites #24

I’m so happy to have a guest share her favorite things today, my sister, Ashley!  She’s been one of my biggest blog supporters and she loves my Friday Favorites so I was excited to ask her to make a list of some things she’s loving recently.  Thanks Ash!

  1. I’ve always wanted to purchase a tinted moisturizer, especially now that I am not working professionally on a daily basis.  Instead I bought the Garnier BB Cream after I did a little research.  A combo of a moisturizer, SPF, and a little color is awesome.  Plus this one had a smooth finish on the face, and it is supposed to help with dark spots and help create a more even skin tone over a couple weeks of use.

bb2. Even though I didn’t like these active pants at first when my sister sent them to me, I ended up buying them because I realized that I only have black or grey active pants.  I really only have black and grey. And I live in activewear on a daily basis.

3. I’ve always looked at Zulily, but never purchased anything.  My sister told me this morning that they had some cute and personalized Easter baskets much cheaper then what I was looking at on Pottery Barn.  I’ve been toying with spending the money on a basket for a 9 month old.  So I ended up pulling the trigger and also purchased a personalized basket and Mickey Mouse board books.

3. I know Nike is not the first brand for avid runners, but I absolutely love my new sneakers I bought to train for my half marathon.  Tip-it’s always a good idea to get fitted for sneakers and if you need inserts.  Just any sneakers are not always the best for your particular foot.  I found this out when I started having knee problems, and as soon as I was fitted and used inserts the pain subsided.  Usually this service is free at your a local sneaker shop.  I use Road Runner Sports here in Phoenix.

4. Love this saying.

5. Shutterfly has great ideas to make photo books.  I’ve been making a photo book for my son’s first year about every three months.  This is much easier and cuter to have your favorite photos all in one place.

6. Once my son started eating solids I was adamant that he was going to try the organic pouch or jar and then I would make it myself once I knew he wasn’t allergic.  Well, that didn’t go as planned because he refuses to eat my homemade baby food.  I mean screams bloody murder when I try to feed it to him.  So, I broke down and just continued to buy the pouches and jars and I am sloooooowly trying to introduce him to my food.  My favorite brands have been Ella’s, Plum’s, Beechnut Organic Jars and Earth’s Best Organic Jars.  Make sure to read the back of each label and that nothing extra is added.

7.  The organic Happy Baby Puffs were a little too small for my son to pick up at first, but now he is addicted to the Baby Mum Mum Rusks.  Like snatches the pieces out of my hand. I usually buy the Veggie and Banana flavors.

8.  My sister gave me a great idea for a quick and easy breakfast now that my son is on the move.  Overnight oats! Use 2/3 cup Old Fashion Oats, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, a heeping big spoon of almond butter, and 3/4 cup of Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk.  I put all of this in a medium size mason jar.  In the morning I nuke it for a minute and 25 seconds and then add some dark chocolate chips. Mix it and Voila!

Friday Favorites #23

Just a reminder that links are highlighted in pink to get to the cited articles and websites.

1. When I am doing cardio I’ve been sick of listening to the playlists on my iPhone so I downloaded a podcast called Posh DJ’s and I’ve actually even been listening to the music in the car.  I recommended it to my sister, as she has been training for a half marathon, and she liked listening to it as well.  Changes up from the same old boring music.

2. Out of all things I wear I probably wear my activewear more than anything else.  Even at work I pull in my activewear pieces to make it a work appropriate outfit.  This list of more brands to buy budget friendly pieces gave me a few more places to browse.

3. Have you seen this clip of Adele that was on Ellen?  I couldn’t stop laughing at her at Jamba Juice.

4. Would love to do this with my instagram photos!  Maybe a weekend project coming up.

5. Even though I am not a mom, I loved this article that’s by a blogger of Olive & Tate that I have been recently reading, I think most of my friends who are moms would find some connection with it.  Her one blog post title Alone Time Sneak, my sister cracked up over and I got a good laugh out of it as well.

6. Of course after reading this I went online and bought black sesame seeds and a tongue scraper.  I’ve been doing oil pulling with coconut oil for over a year now but just recently converted to sesame oil, I haven’t decided yet if I care for the coconut over the sesame.

7. If you are a male you don’t want to read any further!  But for you ladies, I wanted to give you my review of the mylola products.  I am definitely a fan and I think I need to use them one more month to decide whether I am forever client or not.  In terms of doing it’s job, it’s perfect, I have had no issues with leaking of any sort.  The problem I do have is with the applicator, it’s just smaller than I am used to.  Once you use a certain product for such a long time I guess it might take me awhile to make a full switch to the mylola but I do love the 100% natural cotton ingredients.  Let me know if you are interested in giving them a chance, I can send you a code for you to get a discount.

My Most Recent Thoughts #2

My first most recent thoughts can be found here!

As I am typing this my 33rd birthday is a month away!  Ahhh!  33?!?!?!?!  How did that even happen?  I’m not sure if this is the same for everyone but once I hit my 26th birthday I really had to start thinking how old I was when I asked.  It used to confuse me (when I could remember my age at a drop of a dime) how people could forget how many years they had been alive, well I am totally there now!  In all honesty I have blurted out my age wrong (and not on purpose) then I have to go back and tell them my correct age.  This made me think of things that I would tell my younger self.

1. You will forget how old you are, after 25 it’s just a number

2. Nothing is important except health, family and happiness

3. Travel, even if it’s a two hour drive, get away and experience something different

4. Calm down

5. Drink water between alcoholic beverages, your skin and your hungover self will thank you and your hangovers will only get worse as you get older, you can’t function at your full time job on a hangover

6. Karma

7. Eat those veggies but a cupcake won’t kill you

8. But stop at 2 cupcakes

9. Wear sunscreen daily and spray tans are better

10. Start saving money

11. Soak in your friends and family when you have them close, there’s only a short period of time that everyone is within a 15 minute drive

12. You look your most beautiful when you’re happy and healthy

13. You’ll wish you were as skinny as the first time you thought you were fat

14. Pay it forward

15. Sign up for a run, no matter the distance

16. Just because others are getting married, having a baby, moving to Europe doesn’t mean you should be getting married, having a baby, moving to the other side of the world

17. Meditate for at least 10 minutes a day

18. Let go of the small stuff, just because someone didn’t call you back doesn’t mean the world has ended

19. Drink water, no sugary drinks, don’t waste the calories or the lining of your stomach on fake drinks

20. Put your phone down and enjoy the moment, the picture in your head is worth a lot more than the number of pictures on your phone

21. Have a cause, whether it be the disabled, cancer or education

22. Take a year to figure out what you want to do with your life, no need to rush into college or the next big milestone, it’s a lot of money/time to waste when you are clueless of your life goals

23. You have one day, one hour, one minute to be upset about something, it’s just a bad day, hour or minute, not a bad life

24. You’ll have friends for certain stages of your life and it’s ok that they come and go, if a friend doesn’t bring out the best in you then it’s ok to let them go

25. It’s ok to speak up and let it out once in awhile

26. Don’t change for another person, be proud of who you are

27. Have lots of different kinds of friends for different types of reasons

28. Put yourself first

29. Learn to say “No” more often, it’s ok to not be at every event that you are invited to when you want sometime to your self

30. In your 20’s you’ll care what others think of you, in your 30’s you’ll wonder why you ever cared

31. That guy who texts you just once in awhile is not the guy you’re going to spend the rest of your life with, move on

32. Keep a positive journal, you’ll forget the little daily happy moments

33. It’s important to enjoy life because who knows what’s around the corner

There are probably 33+ more things I could say but I think 33 for becoming 33 are enough for today!

Lentil & Cauliflower Tacos

This past week I have been going crazy over these tacos I made.  They were incredibly simple, meatless and delicious.  The recipe I saved on my Pinterest almost a year ago and finally tried it out.  The originally recipe can be found here.

File_000 (32).jpeg

I am sure I have complained about this before on a blog post but I had cutting up cauliflower and broccoli but I still chopped up the whole head of cauliflower to roast.  Before putting in a 400 degree oven for 35 minutes I tossed the cauliflower in a drizzle of olive oil and salt and pepper.

File_007 (3).jpeg

While the cauliflower roasted I sauteed a cup of chopped onion and 2 cloves of garlic in some olive oil over medium heat.  Once the onion was tender, I added in 2 tablespoons of tomato paste, 1/2 tsp of cumin and chili powder and let them all cook together for a minute while stirring.

File_003 (10).jpeg

Then I added in 3/4 cup of dried green lentils with 2 cups of vegetable broth and let it all come to a simmer and cook for 45 minutes.  After the 45 minutes the lentils soaked up all the liquid.

File_008 (5).jpeg

When the lentils were cooking I made the sauce to drizzle over top of the tacos.  I changed this recipe slightly because I thought I had chipotle peppers in adobo sauce in my cupboard but I didn’t.  Instead of using that liquid I whisked together 1/3 cup of mayonnaise with 2 1/2 tbsp of siracha sauce and 2 tbsp of lime juice.

File_006 (6).jpeg

All the parts were ready to make tacos!  Instead of using round corn tortillas I used hard shelled tortillas.  First I put the roasted cauliflower in then layered with the lentil mixture and topped it with some of the sauce.

File_009 (2).jpeg

I’ve been eating the tacos all week but just putting the mixtures in the shells and zapping them in the microwave for 45 seconds before drizzling the sauce on.  This is on my meal plan for this week and I’m going to make salads out of them instead of having a salad on my side to get my greens in.

No Flour Banana Oatmeal Muffins

There were four really brown and sad looking bananas sitting in the basket on my counter so I scrolled through google and found a recipe for Banana Oatmeal Muffins and low and behold they were healthy with no flour or sugar.  Perfect for me!

Recently I found out the difference between Old Fashioned Oats and Quick Cooking Oats is that the quick or instant are just processed a little longer than the old fashioned or rolled oats.  So in knowing that, this recipe called for OFO but I just used gluten free quick cooking oats instead.

File_000 (28).jpeg

When the recipe said to pulse for 10 seconds the 2.5 cups of OFO I just pulsed the QCO for a couple seconds.  Once that was done I added in a cup of plain low fat greek yogurt, 2 eggs, 1/2 cup honey, 2 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp baking soda, 2 tbsp ground flax seed, 1 tsp pure vanilla extract and 2 ripe bananas.

File_002 (9).jpeg

I pulsed the ingredients in the food processor a few times around until the mixture was combined.  In my cupboard I had a few chocolate chips left in a bag and walnuts so I added those into the mixture but just stirring them in.

File_001 (13).jpeg

Normally I just spray my muffin tins with cooking spray but this time I used liners and I wish I hadn’t.  If you leave the muffins out on the counter the muffin would stick to the liner but if I put the muffins in the refrigerator then they didn’t stick.  I always put everything in the refrigerator so it’s not that big of a deal but next time I still won’t use the liners.

File_003 (9).jpeg

The recipe said you would get 12 muffins from the ingredients, however mine made 17.  I put the muffins in a preheated 350 degree oven for 18 minutes and checked with a toothpick and they came out perfect.
